Boogie Down Productions was a hip hop group originally comprised KRS-One, D-Nice, and DJ Scott La Rock. DJ Scott La Rock was murdered on August 27, 1987, months after the release of BDP's debut album Criminal Minded. Boogie Down comes from a nickname for The cultural South Bronx,one of the boroughs of New York.The group pioneered the fusion of dance hall, reggae and hip hop while the lyrics of their debut LP Criminal Mindeded gave descriptions of life in South Bronx in the late 1980s. This set the stage for what became gangsta rap. Boogie Down Production's D- Nice discovered the white rapper and current rocker Kid Rock in 1987 which led to Kid Rock getting a deal with Jive Records in 1988. The membership of BDP changed throughout its existence. KRS-ONE is the only constant being.BDP members and collaborators included Lee Smith, Mad Lion, Channel Live, Run, McBoo, Ms. Melodie, Scottie Morris, Tony Rahsan, Willie D., RoboCop, Harmony, DJ Red Alert, Jay Kramer, D-Square, Rebekah Foster, and Sidney Mills. The ending of BDP ended because KRS- ONE began recording and performing under his own name. Once again for those of you that do not know hip hop was a stepping stone for a lot of genres and paved away for even Kid Rock to enter to Rock n Roll. KRS-One continues to keep representing the truth in hip hop. I remembered the first time I heard BDP and even today with the record out titled "Robot" by Buckshot & KRS-One today KRS-One still educates through his music. Whether its a verse he spits on another record or his own albums what you see is what you get. His messages through his music could possibly save your life. You may not see him flooded through the media, nor does he care about the media attention. What KRS-ONE cares about is truly telling it like it is.
