I am a latina female. Although the woman should not have been ticketed for being spanish speaking I do feel that we hurt the spanish speaking community by not encouraging them to learn English. It hurts latin children in school and in the work force. I work in a hospital where worried spanish speaking parents bring their sick children and there in an unintentional delay in care because we need an interpretor. If I went to live in another country such as Japan. I would anticipate the need to learn the language as it would improve my quality of life. I think you can embrace your culture while also enhancing your quality of life and interaction with the world around you. My grandparents came from Mexico in the 1950's. Their children all speak Spanish and English. We still eat tamales and Manuedo but love the United States and the quality of life and opportunity it represents.
