Certain groups really are wise to get flu shots, while the argument isn't as strong for others. This woman's experience was unfortunate, but remains rare. Statistics are stronger than anecdotes, even when the anecdotes are heart-wrenching. I never got flu shots for years, but since I've finally developed a couple of conditions where doctors strongly recommend them (couple with my age), I finally succumbed this year. I was a lucky one--no side effects at all. Do your homework and make your best decision.
Complications possible from H1N1 vaccine: (a) Allergic reaction (even anaphylaxis)-- also a risk everytime you eat/breath/touch something. (b) Guillen Barr Syndrome
Risks of H1N1 (a) Death rate at about 1 of every 1,000 to 3,000 people. (b) Guillen Barr Syndrome - much more probably to contract this from a live virus than the dead virus that comes in the H1N1 vaccine.
Guillen Barr Syndrom (GBS) occurs at a rate near 1 in 1,000,000 with vaccination. Of those who recieve it, chances of permanent injury/death are close to 1%. That means you've got a 1 in 100,000,000 chance of getting GBS and dying from it if you get the vaccine. Compare that to the 1 in ~2,000 who die from H1N1 (I'll admit, I think this number is inflated, but it's close to what I read), not to mention if you're pre-disposed to conditions like Asthma, heart disease, etc, or are immune compromised like a young child or pregnant woman.
The headline states "Cheerleader crippled for life after H1N1 vaccine." Yet, the story says the vaccine was seasonal flu vaccine, the only one available when she received her vaccine in August. There is no proof the vaccine was more than coincidental in her bizarre illness. And, despite the sensationalistic "crippled for life" description, only time will tell whether this lovely young woman may improve or recover. One should bear in mind, she is ALIVE. People who die of flu- now estimated to be 3900 people, including 540 CHILDREN- do not have any prospect of improvement or recovery. I urge people to take this virus as the serious threat it is. It is now a largely preventable infection. I got my H1N1 vaccine; I hope you will, too.
Wow, heartbreaking. Anyone think that this young lady had a pre-existing condition? My sons have both had the vaccines, as well as all their childhood ones. I have no doubt that I have done the right thing for my family. And by doing that I feel like we are also protecting others by not allowing us to further the spread of this virus. As I watched in horror, I can't go along with the notion that the flu shot will do this to another person. She is definitely one in a million, poor beautiful girl.
I am just amazed at what the media can do to people, yes there are more deaths from the HINI virus but there are a heck of alot more cases, so as is common sense, the more people sick with it, the more deaths there will be. This is just simple math. What the media is failing to report is the number of people that have the virus (which is just about everyone now who has had it and most did not know it) and how many people have survived it. Turn off the tv's listen to some music, play with your kids outside and LIVE!!
Yes, yes, we already know the type of person that will accept the Federal Government as your Big Brother and will also go run and get vaccinated. What difference, I must still ask you simpletons, does it make if you take a "standard" flu shot or the new extremely questionable "H1N1" shot? You're still opening yourself up to ravaging of your immune system, exposure to cancer virus and more, mercury, etc. Amish have healthier kids than you. Don't question that? I only type this now because I know a lot of people who are on the fence will fall over to my side every time I do make these statements. Go research what I'm implying here and you will find enough to stop yourself from accepting shots. Protect your family, your friends and your kids if you can. Even they will argue with you. Be prepared.
