We have to make something like this every week on the masters course I'm doing. I'm using Unity 3D which is a browser-based real-time 3D engine. You can explore this scene from inside your web browser by going to my site at http://www.marunchak.co.uk/unity/temple
You might need to download the Unity 3D plugin, if so you'll be prompted. If you feel uneasy about it, visit unity3d.com , you'll see that it's an extremely well respected engine now.
The statue is a human model from turbosquid, I just changed the pose, nothing complex there. The scene was made and lightmapped using the light-up plugin for sketchup which you can get at www.light-up.co.uk
I originally used face gen to capture my face, it came out with good results. The problem was that in turning it to a statue, I lost a lot of definition from the textures. To that end I decided to keep the original turbosquid model and just rough it up a bit.
