The police in Canada took another dangerous step towards full blown militarization today with the announcement by the Vancouver Police of their purchase of a, largely untested and controversial sonic weapon called an LRAD.
The Vancouver Police put an absolutely comical spin on the purchase of the device, as shown in this CTV report posted under fair use, claiming that they promise to "keep the volume turned down"... and that it was purchased as a "loud speaker" during emergencies.... and even bristled at the idea that the device is a gun or weapon.
Despite their contention that the device is not a weapon, it was developed and purchased by the military for just such a purpose, and was even used as a weapon in Iraq, and can cause permanent hearing loss... particularly in infants and children.
Perhaps the VPD will be getting flame throwers next, and tell us they are merely for illumination? The public appears to be willing to buy anything from this department.
