Education Meridian MS - The Meridian Public School District%u2019s first graduating class for 1895-96 consisted of 14 boys and girls. Through the years, M-P-S-D has earned a reputation for innovation and excellence, best seen in such long-standing programs as the Ross Collins Career and Technical Center, and newer efforts like the nationally-recognized %u201CCitizens at Work%u201D character education initiative. Recent state accreditation ratings indicate dramatic improvement in the district%u2019s elementary schools that should translate into higher achievement down the line as students progress through the system.
Not satisfied with the status quo, the district is considering major reform that would create smaller learning communities within schools, offering the prospect of more personalized attention, and concentrated support for students.
For education beyond high school, Meridian Community College offers a wide range of occupation-related studies, as well as general education courses transferable toward a four-year degree. Mississippi State University%u2019s Meridian campus complements the community college experience. It%u2019s an upper division--junior, senior, and graduate-level university. M-S-U%u2019s recently opened Riley Center for Education and Performing Arts offers enhanced cultural, artistic, and educational opportunities that are unique to the region.
