original description

Neighborhoods Meridian MS - First settled in 1831, Meridian bounced back after being virtually destroyed in the Civil War. With the city%u2019s resurgence tied to the railroad, new neighborhoods arose, each making its mark on Meridian%u2019s history. The Merrehope (MAIR-ee-hohp) Historical District grew out of the city%u2019s northern expansion just after the Civil War. West End development begins around 1870, as Meridian grew to become at one time the state%u2019s largest city. Rising to life at the turn of the 20th century, the Poplar Springs Historic District features Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, Bungalow, and Craftsman homes beneath the many shade trees planted as the region grew. Highland and Highland Park are forever tied to the start of streetcar service in the 1880s. The area is home to the historic Dentzel (DENT-zel) Carousel. The carousel is a designated National Landmark, and Highland Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Meridian%u2019s Downtown Historic District includes examples of late 19th, and early 20th century architectural styles, from Italianate row buildings, to the Art Deco showcase, the Threefoot Building. Throughout the city are beautiful, established neighborhoods with homes nestled on quiet, tree-lined streets.
