A pretty big debate is happening in liberal circles over whether or not John McCain stole his POW story about a kind Christian guard. First, here's McCain relaying the story in a ad produced during last year's Republican primary season:It's a poignant, powerful story. A story he told for the first time in 1999 in his book, "Faith of my Fathers." The autobiograpy was produced in a lead up to his Presidential campaign in 2000.Now, there is serious debate whether or not McCain stole this story from someone he admired, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. Solzhenitsyn passed away earlier this month, on August 3. Solzhenitsyn was a Russian novelist who wrote movingly about his time in a Soviet Gulag. He writes of a similar experience to the one McCain had. Only his experience was with a fellow prisoner. The similarities are striking enough, and given McCain's at least one previous altering of his POW experience to fit a political audience, it's worth the read. Here's the Huffington Post on the story, Andrew Sullivan, and the Jed Report.
