I can't pretend to be an expert on this but I recall that the original Creature Comforts series was filmed as advertising for a home energy supplier: ordinary people talked about how they keep themselves warm in the winter and Aardman put their voices into the mouths of exotic animals. I particularly loved one woman's voice - Jamaica meets Bristol in an accent I only ever hear in my home town.
