Much as we're expected to remain straight-faced through her overwrought, undercooked solo dalliances, Gwen's recent video history predicates we'll put up with anything from her cuz she's fine. A racy nun, a bedazzled cheerleader or, in the case of "4 in the Morning", the kind of woman who wears makeup to bed; ridiculous conceits, all, but at least the others sported cool costumes and flashy colors.
The song's a trifle, the sort of cooing proto-trip-hop that could've graced the unplayed side of a Shanice cassingle circa 1993. And the dishwater-hued video's clearly an afterthought, too, essentially four minutes of the last 30 seconds of the "Underneath It All" clip without the onion-peel outline. Gwen bathes, she writhes, she fitfully pours her tea. Even a pretty girl at close range wears on you after a while.
