I have looked at the video David has talked about again and again and again, and I have reviewed photography effects. I have also reviewed the dialogue regarding the items seen and how the "disks" apears to be going behind the teather. Here are my conclusions.

I do not believe the size of the teather is caused by electrical discharge or charged gas. I believe it looks as wide as it does because it is Astronomically out of focus. I also believe the disks that "pass behind it" are actually iluminated particles (in the form of airy disks) that are close to the camera passing in FRONT of the teather. It apears to pass behind it due to a refraction of light. This is actually a very common thing that can be seen in real life. Looking down a hot highway in the summer, at distance, things will seem to hover ABOVE the highway. In that case it is cause by densities in the atmosphere, but a refraction of light is clearly demonstrated.

In this case we are dealing of simply a camera (no atmosphere) and a distance of up to 100 miles (not giant but still astronomical where the cameras mechanical abilities are concerned). Astroniomical images work quite differently that you would expect. To demonstrate this, I encourage anyone to go outside and take a photograph of the moon. Instead of a large disk with lots of details, you will get a small spot. Even though it looks large to the human eye, it is still an astronomical object and requires considerable magnification to photograph it correctly.

In summary, the video is of Airy disks that by refraction of light, create the illusion that they pass behind the teather (also out of focus) when in fact they are iluminated particles passing close to the camers (in front of the teather). I encourage all photographers to assume this to be true, and from that, to go out and duplicate it.
