In 2001, the EU commission set itself the ambitious objective of halving the number of fatalities on European roads by 2010 (from 50 0000 to 25 000). Progress to date is substantial - more than 8 000 more lives were saved in 2005 than in 2001 - but more must be done to achieve the goal. The first European road safety day aims to inform young and old alike, and to let them bear witness.
