The first casuality report is 30,000 but this increases to 194,000 as more reports come in. From the epicenter the damage goes up to 15 kilometers away. The closer to the epicenter the more damage.
Factual Factory- Stock Footage, (color) Launch Coverage 1/28/86. 51 L crew enjoys breakfast 3 hours before take off. First mission that is allowing a civilian on the flight. Shot of the shuttle. Astronauts load into an elevator, meet the press and make their way to the bus that will take them to the shuttle. Begin shuttle count down and the shuttle takes off. Footage follows the shuttle as it climbs farther away. An explosion happens and a malfunction is caught on film.
NASA- The flight crew to the 51 L are trained for their mission. They open a box and look at the contents- it holds all kinds of film. They listen to an expert about their freeze dried food. Every aspect of this mission is planned and taught. They go through their luggage and make sure that every thing fits.
Factual Factory- Stock Footage, "Operation Que" was the name given the Nevada Test in 1955, designed to explore the effects of small nuclear weapons upon buildings, towers and equipment of many kinds. A woman gets dropped off at the test site and enters a motor home with a sign above the door that says, "Civil Defense Operations" inside there are men on phones, the woman is taken out side and shown a diagram of what the test site looks like and what is going to happen for this nuclear test. Houses are built, mannequins are placed inside and outside, power lines, water tanks, food, makeup, cars, etc... Everything is set. Spectators come to see the bomb go off. Men
