FGM - Female Genital Mutilation (or cutting) is causing women worldwide to SPEAK OUT on the injustice of this cultural/historical practice. Every year around 2 million girls around the world are at risk of genital mutilation and cutting. UNICEF is committed to ending this practice. At this ceremony in Senegal, women and religious leaders publicly declare the practice over in their communities. Overturning years of tradition and religious belief in the name of human rights, the government pronounces it illegal. The NGO Tostan is a key UNICEF partner in the campaign to end FGM. Its community-based method of teaching and explaining to children and leaders alike, the issues surrounding women%u2019s rights and health have been chosen by the World Health Organisation as the best way of eradicating the practice.
