original description

I was watching TV recently when a frequently played Visa commercial came on. The gist of the commercial is that life is better, faster, and filled with less hassle if we use our credit or check cards instead of cash. The tag line at the conclusion of the commercial was “money shouldn’t slow you down.” After thinking that phrase over a few times I thought that it was an intriguing question to pose. Should money slow us down? According to the commercial cash is a nuisance that could, and should, be replaced by the magic plastic card in our wallet. Now, I’ll be the first to agree that there are times that using a debit card instead of cash is convenient and easier, especially when I don’t have enough cash on hand to purchase whatever it is I about ready to buy. No need to run frantically to a cash machine, check my balance, and get my cash. Instead I can just swipe that mystical plastic card and vola, that purchase is done and out of mind. But isn’t that what credit card company’s want us to do? Make a purchase without thinking twice, or without first considering if we really need or can afford the purchase in the first place? Company’s like Visa, MasterCard, Discover and the rest of the credit industry have done research and they know that we as consumers are prone to spend MUCH more if we don’t have to think about purchases for very long. Swiping a card doesn’t register as much financial pain as digging into our wallet and handing over “real money” (as in CASH) to the salesperson. Maybe money should slow us down a little and make us consider a little more closely what kinds, and sizes, of purchases we are making. Perhaps having a few extra seconds to think about a purchase before we make it would help us be better managers over our hard earned money.
