This karaoke used media from Slideshare , Power Point, Jing, ITunes, and Windows Movie Maker. This is a new project for me not only to create some sing-alongs for my students, but to learn more about using these computer applications. I hope you will be able to enjoy these songs with your students, and if you have a karaoke to share, please let me know. I am developing a Karaoke Songbook for ESL at http://karaoke4esl.blogspot.com/ and would love to include some of yours. I will continue to post a song or two on this blog for you to share with your friends or family. They are works in progress as I learn to manipulate these computer applications, but I hope they will contribute to your enjoying the season and singing your way through the holidays. Merry Christmas!

Several days ago I mentioned that the That's Messed Up crew showed up in my office with a 73 year old man who the VA had been telling they had no record of his service. Within minutes, we were able to get this man a VA Regional Office letter (VARO) that verified his veteran status and left Andy Cordan, not to mention the man and his daughter, happily speechless. Here's the piece that aired on Monday regarding this particular client: Veteran denied medical benefits after losing discharge papers  by Aly - December 14th, 2009 - 5:39 pm| A Middle Tennessee veteran has been trying to get medical benefits at the V.A. Hospital for 9 years. Groce Nunn says the problem is, he lost his discharge papers 50 years ago, and has been unable to prove he is a veteran. After traveling as far away as St. Louis and contacting Congressman Bart Gordon’s office with no success, he contacts that is Messed Up. Groce Nunn is now 73. As we talk he tells me of his time in the military where he says he was a tank driver for the U.S. Army from 1953-1956. Nunn says he was with the 3rd Armored Division stationed in Germany. Nunn, a father of 4, shows me his dog tags and two medals the Army sent him. What the 73 year old doesn’t have is a copy of his discharge papers. Nunn says he has no idea where they went. And this is the problem. Nunn’s family says without this specific document, the VA Hospital won’t accept his request for treatments, medicines and medical benefits. Nunn’s daughter is Dixie Aull. “They had no record of him being in service. We have tried everything even going to St. Louis.” Why St. Louis? I ask. “He thought if we went personally, they could help us.” Aull is referring to a massive warehouse fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. It’s here, in 1973, that approximately 80-percent of army records from 1912 to 1960 were destroyed. Aull and her father believe his discharge papers were among the information f...
Two great examples of colonial Georgian house architecture have made the news this month. Above: Tasmania's historic Clarendon House, red room interior. (ABC News) Historic homestead makeover Source: ABC News online Friday Dec 4, 2009 9:55am AEDT Video: Historic homestead gets revamp (7pm TV News TAS) Evandale 7212 The National Trust in Tasmania has welcomed funding to restore what is reputedly one of Australia's greatest colonial homes. The State Government has announced it will provide $120,000 to restore Clarendon House, built in northern Tasmania in 1838. That is on top of $800,000 from the Federal Government. The Trust's managing director, Chris Tassell, says the funding will be used to repaint and repair crumbling stairs on the historic property. "I think it's generally recognised that this is perhaps one of the greatest, arguably the greatest, early pre-1850s colonial houses in Australia," he said. "I mean it is of a scale and magnitude that is literally unmatched and it gives some idea of the wealth that was generated from northern Tasmania." Above: Campania House (ABC) Historic house stays in Tasmanian hands Source: ABC News online 13 December 2009 One of southern Tasmania's oldest homes has sold at auction to a local farmer. Campania House and 22 hectares of farmland went for $1.54 million. About 1000 people attended the sale and bidding was strong but the eight bedroom sandstone house was snapped up by grazier Robert Downie. The house contents are also being sold, with proceeds going to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne. Mr Downie plans to live in the Georgian property, which was built for Lieutenant George Weston Gunning who arrived in Van Dieman's Land circa 1810. Lt Gunning was made Inspector of Public Works and officiated at the laying of the foundation stone of Richmond Bridge in 1823.

Currently watching the Georgia Tech (BEEEEEEEEEES!) / Boston University game and witnessed a series of unfortunate events: 1) GA Tech player is going out of bounds along with a Boston player. GA Tech player trying to retain possession throws the ball against the Boston player and hits him in the FACE. 2) GA Tech player who threw ball then slips and hits the ground hard on his ass. 3) Another GA Tech player rushes to the aid of the first player and proceeds to slip and nearly breaks his ankle in the process. Are we missing anything? Geez Louise.
