July 5 (Bloomberg) — Venus Williams beat her younger sister Serena in straight sets to retain her Wimbledon tennis title and win her seventh Grand Slam championship. Venus, 28, defeated Serena 7-5, 6-4 to become the first woman to repeat as champion at the All England Club in southwest London since her sister in 2003. It’s her fifth Wimbledon crown. “Five titles, it’s the first thing that popped into my head,” Venus said in a news conference. “I think had I had this achievement at any other tournament it would have been awesome, but not nearly the same meaning as Wimbledon.” It was the first Grand Slam final between the sisters in five years and the seventh overall.
