Bob Dylan wrote many of his most famous songs while living upstairs from the Cafe Expresso in Woodstock, NY.He ended up living in Woodstock throughout much of the 60s, and bands started following him to town soon afterwards. So it's no mistake why they called it "The Woodstock Festival," even though the town fathers, fearing an invasion of longhairs, prevented the festival from actually being in the town. But the town of Woodstock actually had its own Woodstocks, called The Soundouts, which occurred in the years prior to the Woodstock Festival and featuring many of the same artists. A section on the Soundouts from David McDonald's film Woodstock You Can't Get There From Here appears elsewhere on this page. Maybe a bit less sexy a topic as Dylan, but we highly recommend it.
