After more dislocations of my right shoulder than I can count over the last few years, I decided it was time to get it fixed so I can (hopefully) stop being such a liability on the rivers…Picture from MikeSo I headed to Manchester for my shoulder stabilisation surgery with Len Funk. On top of his vast array of qualifications, Mr Funk has won international competitions in miniature modelling so I figured his hands must be steady enough for the job. He was very nice too. On Aussie Dave’s recommendation, I had asked if I could be awake to watch the operation but I settled for a general anaesthetic on being told I could get a copy of the operation to watch afterwards! Once asleep and the nerve blocker had been injected, I was positioned in a “beach chair” and my shoulder was inflated for the surgery. Apparently there was a big tear so as well as tightening the anterior capsule Mr Funk carried out a Bankart repair using anchors to reattach the labrum. So now my shoulder is “structurally sound” & much less likely to dislocate again, yay! Oh, and I’ve been referred to the shoulder physio Penny has been seeing so perhaps I’ll be joining Penny in her daily shoulder exercise regime while we count down the days ‘til we can paddle again! Here’s some video clips of my surgery:
