Pope Benedict XVI: "Order the Market to the Common Good"
The market economy leads to economic and civil progress only if it is oriented to the common good. This was one of the messages of Pope Benedict XVI in his Saturday discourse to the Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation, which on Friday held an international meeting on models of economic and social development. Freedom in the economic sector must insert itself in the framework of a legal context that places it at the service of integral human freedom and in a vision of responsible liberty, the core of w
Pope: Beware of 'formal and empty' Eucharistic worship
Faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist cannot be taken for granted. This was Benedict XVIs admonition during his homily of the Mass for the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, which he celebrated in front of the Basilica of St. John Lateran on Thursday evening, June 11th.Benedict XVI: Today there arises the risk of a serpentine secularization even within the Church, which can convert into a formal and empty Eucharistic worship, in celebrations lacking this participation from the heart that is expres
Pope: The absence of Christ causes total sadness
We should desire nothing but the joy of the truth that is Christ and avoid everything but his absence. This, in fact, should be regarded as the only cause of total and eternal sadness. These words of John Scotus Erigena, a Christian philosopher and 9th century theologian who was born in Ireland and lived in France, inspired Benedict XVIs General Audience catechesis on June 10th in St. Peters Square. The Holy Father acknowledged that even though the scholars work is not widespread, several of his intuitions st

Pope Benedict XVI: "Only love makes us happy"
God does not live in splendid solitude: He is rather an inexhaustible source of life that gives and communicates without ceasing. On the feast of the Most Holy Trinity, Pope Benedict XVI recalled how God is love, not in the unity of a single person, but in the Trinity of a single substance. He is Creator and Merciful Father: He is the Only Begotten Son, eternal wisdom incarnate, who died and rose from the dead for us; he is the Holy Spirit that moves the cosmos and all history. God, therefore, is all and on
Benedict XVI: Rabanus Maurus was a 'multimedia' exegete
Rabanus Maurus, Abbot of the monastery of Fulda, a wise Carolingian, and the Archbishop of Mainz, lived from 780 to 856 and embodied the figure of shepherd, man of God and attentive scholar of faiths requirements. Benedict XVI underlined this in his General Audience catechesis held in St. Peters Square on June 3rd.The Pope explained that Rabanus Maurus, author of the famous Veni Creator text, wished to offer to others the richness of the first Church Fathers biblical commentaries through his commentaries on

The Holy Spirit Conquers Fear
Pope Benedict on Sunday presided over a mass marking the feast of Pentecost during which he reflected on both spiritual and biological pollution saying, What air is for biological life, the Holy Spirit is for spiritual life; and just as an atmospheric pollution exists that poisons the environment and living organisms, there is also a pollution of the heart and the spirit that mortifies and poisons spiritual existence. He went on to say that the two images used to describe the importance of this feast are th
The Holy Spirt is the Soul of the Church
In his Regina Coeli address in St Peters Square on Pentecost Sunday, Pope Benedict spoke of the Holy Spirit as being the soul of the Church. He said that without the Holy Spirit the Church would have been reduced to a large historical movement, perhaps a humanitarian kind of agency. The church in reality, the Holy Father went on to say, is continually moulded and driven by the Spirit of God. It is a living body, whose vitality is the fruit of the invisible divine Spirit. After inviting everyone to learn fro

Benedict XVI: St. Theodore humanized the workplace
We need to rediscover the human face of the workplace; the riches it creates must be invested for the greater good of all and to help the less fortunate. This was the reflection Pope Benedict XVI offered during his weekly General Audience. The audience held in St. Peters Square was focused on St. Theodore the Studite, one of the great reformers of monastic life and a defender of sacred images who died in 826. St. Theodore, a true beacon for our society dominated by individualism, preached simplicity and sobr
